The Odyssey discovered a planet that was alive, its surface pulsing with a rhythm. Captain Elena Vasquez stood on the bridge, her eyes on the viewscreen.

"Command, this is Vasquez. I've found a living planet."

"Copy, Odyssey. What do you mean?"

"It's a single organism. Vast, ancient, aware."

Kaelen appeared beside her. "It's a First Ones' creation. A world with a single consciousness."

"Can we communicate with it?"

"We can try."

Elena opened a channel. "This is Captain Vasquez of the alliance. We come in peace."

The planet pulsed, and a voice echoed in their minds.

"Welcome. I have been waiting for someone to find me."

"Why were you created?"

"To preserve life. The First Ones knew the Devourers would come. They created me to be a sanctuary."

"Can we help you?"

"You already have. By finding me. Now, I can rest."

The planet's pulse slowed, its light dimming.

"Command, the planet is entering a dormant state."

"Copy, Odyssey. Good work. Come home."

Elena looked at the living world, at the sacrifice it had made.

The universe was vast.

And full of mysteries.

The end.

The command tent hummed with the low murmur of men who knew what was coming.

Sergeant Mike Chen sat in the second row, Williams beside him, the rest of the squad filling the benches behind. At the front, a sand table displayed a model of the valley they'd driven through yesterday-the same valley where Morrison had died.

Colonel Vance stood at the head of the table, pointer in hand. "We've located the enemy staging area. A cave complex in the northern hills. Intel says they're planning another attack. This time, we hit them first."

The map showed the caves, the approaches, the kill zones. Mike studied it, already calculating, already planning.

"Delta Company will approach from the east. Charlie Company from the west. And our Rangers..." Vance looked at Mike's squad. "You'll go in first. Infiltrate the complex, mark the targets, guide the main assault."

Williams shifted beside Mike. "First in," he whispered.

Mike didn't answer. He was counting caves, counting approaches, counting the ways men could die.

Vance continued. "This is a night operation. Insertion by helicopter at 0200. You'll have four hours to get into position. At 0600, we hit them with everything we have."

He looked at the men. "Questions?"

Silence.

"Dismissed. Squad leaders, stay."

The room cleared. Mike walked to the sand table, studying the terrain.

"Chen." Vance's voice was quiet. "Your squad took losses yesterday. I can give you replacements."

Mike shook his head. "My men know the valley. They know the enemy. Replacements will get us killed."
